I believe this has been a stellar year for IB in Tennessee with the IB Pathway
approval and now the Senate and House support. Let's hope the Governor signs
it into legislation. The House bill was not changed from the Senate Bill.
This is a great first step. Both of these bills passed unanimously (S 31-0 & H
96-0).
Highlights of the bill are as follows:
• Colleges & Universities must grant 24 credit hours for a International
Baccalaureate Diploma, provided a 4 or higher was obtained on each course
test
• This is in effect July 1, 2010 (our first class will be able to take advantage of this law)
• There shall be an incentive program for high schools having a IB Program that is successful
• This will be administered by Tenn. Dept. Of Education
• The Principal of each school with an IB program shall have a five member team to determine usage of funds
• Funds can donate funds by corporations or other entities to the state or local level
• The commissioner for each local school district can solicit for funds, grants or donations for this program
The downside:
• The Governor must still sign before it is law
• These bills do not specifically designate funds for the incentive program;
however the mechanism is in place for monies to be allocated by the state
(not to mention that grants, funds & donations can be asked for)
Thanks everyone. Mary Catherine Bradshaw
